The Largest Capacity Leveler In The World!
Concord Steel recently took delivery of the world’s largest leveler built by Cauffiel Machinery Corporation of Toledo, Ohio. Concord has offices in Warren, Ohio and Chicago Heights, Illinois. They specialize in steel plate and products fabricated from steel plate. The machine has leveling capacity from ˝” to 7 ” thick by a maximum width of 125”. The plate leveler can also be used to make plate from heavy coils as a cut-to-length line.
All of the rolls, which are made from forged chrome alloy heat-treated steel, have a 20” diameter x 130” face. All rolls are driven with the highest capacity mill type gear universals ever produced for 4,000,000 in-lb. of torque through a heavy-duty distribution gear network. All gears have a wide face width and special high torque gear tooth with a shallow helical angle so that they can produce the maximum torque. All of the rolls are mounted in heavy mill type dual roller bearings with seals with a maximum separating force of 3,000 tons.
The leveler is controlled by PLC and linear position transducers as roll position feed back. A touch screen OIT has been provided for the operator ; and in addition to the rolls vertical up/down motion, it is possible to tilt the rolls individually to accommodate any variation of the plate thickness. Any particular roll configuration can be uploaded to the machine memory and can be downloaded in the future. This feature expedites the roll setup to level plate from ˝” to 7 ” thick. The rolls will automatically move to position themselves according to preloaded memory configurations for a given thickness and yield. Fine adjustments are then made by the operator depending on the variation in thickness, yield etc.
The leveler is equipped with large diameter entrance and exit roller tables. The entrance and exit table rolls are driven with variable frequency drives synchronized with the leveler.
The largest peeler system ever built that will peel coils up to 1.5” thick was also supplied with the leveler. This will allow Concord Steel to be extremely competitive with a product that is excess to the steel mills. The leveler will afford Concord the ability to do Toll Processing by leveling to one-half mill tolerance, at the same time removing cross bow or twists from the plate.
The machine was fully demonstrated on Cauffiel’s floor before shipment for Concord’s executives and engineers for final acceptance. The leveler will be in full operation by February 14th, 2003 at Concord Steel’s Chicago Heights location which is equipped with many automatic large CNC controlled flame cutting machines and a Machine shop that can provide all value added necessary to provide completely finished product.
